Have you heard of Caine’s Arcade? If you live in Los Angeles, your answer is probably “yes.” The video of Caine, the kid behind the cardboard “arcade,” went viral a few weeks ago; since then he’s experienced the typical 15 minutes of fame. And then some. Caine Monroy built his 1980′s-style arcade out of cardboard boxes in his dad’s storefront in East Los Angeles, and his labor of love caught our collective attention and admiration by storm.
His homemade arcade is ingenious: non electronic versions of video games made from recycled objects, which are playable. Customers can buy tickets and play for prizes. Caine’s creativity is hard to resist, as is his smile and happy demeanor. After the video went viral (rare for a video that’s over 10 minutes long!) he began to be featured in local news stories. People started to come to see what was going on, and paying to play at Caine’s Arcade. Check out the video: there’s a soccer game with green plastic army men, there’s a Skee Ball sort of thing, there’s a claw machine (made with yarn) and other homemade versions of arcade classics. His prizes are from dollar stores but really — it’s not about the prizes.
The Los Angeles Consortium of Online Travel absolutely loves the story behind Caine’s Arcade, and is proud to have a fundraiser and raffle as part of our next meet up. Caine’s Arcade Foundation fosters entrepreneurship and creativity in Los Angeles kids, and the Goldhirsh Foundation has pledged to match donations up to $250,000 to this foundation. Not that LACOT will be able to raise a quarter of a million dollars at our next meet up, of course, but everything helps. And guess what – just over $200,000 has already been raised.
Join us on Tuesday, June 12 at the Xbar in the Hyatt Century Plaza, 6:30 – 9:00PM. We’ll be selling raffle tickets this time, with some great prizes (not from the dollar store, promise) you can win, and all proceeds will go to Caine’s Arcade Foundation. Let’s do our part to help the foundation get enough to earn that matching donation.
We’ll have some great prizes to raffle off, including two bottles of Napa Valley wine from the Napa Wine Project: a bottle of Tedeschi Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon (2004) and a bottle of Ceja Family Vineyards Pinot Noir (2008). Other prizes include five 1-year memberships to Member Travel – worth $49 or $99 depending on how you use it – and two $50 coupons for Groundlink, the global car service and airport pickup transportation company. There’s another one or two very cool prizes as well, but to win them, you’ll have to buy a raffle ticket. Remember, this isn’t just about winning, this supports an excellent Los Angeles-specific foundation.
Long story short? Come to our next meet up on June 12 at the Xbar in Century City’s Hyatt Century Plaza. The event will be as fun as always, with the bonus of a raffle to win great prizes for a great cause. Raffle tickets are $3 for one ticket, $5 for 10 ($20 for 40 tickets, etc), If you can’t make it to this LACOT event, you can still buy a raffle ticket and support Caine’s Arcade Foundation (and possibly win, we’ll keep track). Just drop us a line.
